Big Wig Out Planned for Bellingham on May 23

A small group of fun-loving locals are making plans for the 2nd Annual Big Bellingham Wig Out, a day in which all residents of the area are encouraged to…wear a wig!

The Wig Out is planned for Friday during the Ski-to-Sea weekend. The informal all-ages event was inspired, according to planners, by a woman who used to work in a mortgage company downtown. She came to work each day in a different wig, and often a matching costume, a “welcome sign of attitude and audacity in an area dominated by suits and blue jeans”, according to Wig Out co-planner Kate Clark. “I was talking with my co-workers, as well as my sister, Alice, and we realized that there were a lot of us who liked seeing someone who dared to dress just as she pleased. The idea of the Wig Out came to us as the perfect way for all of us to take ourselves a little less seriously, to lighten up and build some community around just having fun. We found some other like-minded folks and the Wigsters were born.”

Everyone is encouraged to wear a wig (or toupee) on May 23, all day, to work as well as to the Wig Walk, an informal promenade route on the sidewalks of downtown in the late afternoon. The Walk will culminate at a Wig Out Party at the Radio Museum, 1312 Bay Street, with super-funky dance music, and Wiggy Awards for the best wigs in a variety of categories, including Most Outrageous Wig, Best Handmade Wig, and Best Wee Wig in the children’s category.

Additional plans include the Wig Patrol coming to local offices where wigs are being worn to show on a big screen at the Wig Out Party, and an eventual effort to be entered in the Guinness Book of World Records for the most wigs worn on the same day in one town.

A wig was sent to Britney Spears and invitations to Oprah and Ellen. Some wigs will be available at the party for those who are wigless.
