How did the WigOut get started?

The Wigsters are a small group of local people who love to have fun and who want to help show the world that Bellingham is anything but subdued. We LOVE this town-  the birthplace of THE WIG OUT!

The Wig Out was first inspired by a downtown worker named Julia who often wore character wigs (and the costumes to match) to her job at a local mortgage company. Her audacity and sense of personal freedom was refreshing in a sea of suits and jeans. Sisters Kate and Alice Clark were talking in the hot tub one chilly spring evening, and decided Julia had it goin’ on. Besides, as Alice noted, a WIG can change your life.

The purpose of the Wig Out is to have as many residents as possible wear a wig every year on the Friday before Memorial Day. In Bellingham, people wear thier wigs all day, wherever they are- on the bus, at work, in the park, or out to lunch.  The Wig Walk starts at 5pm (a promenade route through downtown) and a big Get Your Funky Wig On Wig Out Party follows at the Radio Museum party space.  Everyone-young and old, silly and serious, conservative and liberal, white, black and brown, rich and poor- all of us can benefit from getting our Wig On once a year.

We’ve been working to make the WigOut a national holiday! Last year we sent a new wig to Britney Spears, and an invitiation to Oprah and Ellen.  This year the Wigout has spread to Detroit and the United Kingdom!  Bellingham is truly a trend-setting kinda place.

So try it!  A wig can change your life.  This event is a time to try out any kind of hair without altering your own. Its Halloween with better weather!  It is also our fervent hope that the WigOut will inspire all Bellinghamsters to get a little silly, to shake off the long winter and early spring chill, to release thier worries and have some fun just for the sake of having fun.  See you there!!
